Some repair shops like to charge $100 (especially dealer service centres) just to connect a device to your car to obtain the engine code and "diagnose" the issue, without even having repaired or replaced anything!

Did you know that you can buy this device yourself for under $20 and obtain the code yourself? Yep, that's right - it's called an OBD2 adapter. Just buy it online to have it shipped to your home. All you do to use it is connect it to the OBD connector on your car, install an app called 'Torque' on your smartphone (assuming you have an Android) and connect to it via bluetooth to get the engine code.

Once you have the engine code you can then go to, enter the code, and it will give you a recommendation on what to do to fix the issue so that the 'Check Engine' light goes away!
